Design Like a Pro with Canva
Let me start off by saying I am NOT a design person, especially graphic design. If I had it my way, I would create a poster the old fashioned way -- markers and a poster board. That is until I was introduced to the Canva app. This is a free app that you can download here. For those of you who are scared of technology, don't worry about spending hours trying to figure out how to use this app. When you create your account, it gives you a tutorial (only a minute) to teach you how to navigate the app and create awesome posters, graphics, cover photos and more.
This app is easy to use with many drag and drop features. This allows you to place parts of your poster exactly where you would like them! This app could easily be integrated into upper level classrooms. I would not suggest this app for any students 3rd grade or below. This app requires a lot of time and patience. Therefore, I would recommend this app to more mature classrooms. Canva has a lot of pre-made templates you can use and also pre-made graphics. The only downside I found to using Canva was that not everything is free on the app. If you want to up your game with a high quality background photo off of the app, you'll pay $1 for it. A cheap price to pay, but it can add up quick! That is why I found a loophole. You can look up photos from Google Images or Pinterest, save them to your photo library, and add them to your project. Just made sure they don't have a watermark on them! If you still need some extra help, be sure to check out these help pages: The Canva app can be used on iPad and on a computer. This makes it easily accessible for teachers and students. Many teachers have used this app for students to do biography projects, create a poster about a book students read in class, or to create a poster outlining the classroom rules. This app is a great way for students to learn how to pick out main ideas and put it into a poster. They also gain skills in graphic design such as how to make certain elements stand out or how to make something look engaging.
