The Tween Teacher: Heather Wolpert-Gawron
Teaching is not an easy profession. In fact, every day is a new challenge. No one better understands this than Heather Wolpert-Gawron. Heather is the author of the blog Tween Teacher. She is an award-winning middle school teacher, the coach of one of the largest debate teams in the country, and works to create different kinds curriculum. She leads classes for teachers about Project Based Learning and classes about how to use technology in the classroom.
Recently, Heather has tapped into the latest technology, 3D printers. She knows her students have been interested in how they work, so she has created a project where the students study 3D printers, how to create a design, and what they wanted to do with a 3D printer. Heather turned this into a English Language Arts lesson by having students do research and write about each of those things. Her students went on to create many different things with the 3D printer.

To really hook her students into learning, Heather gives them a suspenseful question. For example, one time she wanted her students to find out about a certain author. Heather listed off 5-6 facts about this author while students listened attentively. Once she read each clue she said, "Ready, set, go!" Students opened up their computers and began to research anything they remembered about this author in order to uncover who it is. Check it out here!
